Saturn return: your exact dates, and what really changes at 29 and 58
Saturn return: work out your exact passes at 29, 58 and 88, the table by year of birth, why there are one to three passes, and what the transit really changes.

Straight answer · Calculator · Table by year of birth
You are 28 or 29, or 57, and someone has told you “that’s your Saturn return”. The articles promise a crisis, chaos, a rebirth. The Saturn return is first of all a date: the moment Saturn comes back to the exact degree it occupied at your birth, every 29 years and 5 months.
This article gives you that date, to the hour, for your first, second and third return. Then it explains what the transit really changes, how to read it in your chart, and why it is nothing like a fate.
First return
Between 28 and 30
Second return
Between 57 and 60
Active period
6 weeks to 10 months
The short answer
The Saturn return is the moment when Saturn, after a full circuit of the zodiac in 29 years and 5 months, comes back to its birth position. It happens between 28 and 30, then between 57 and 60, then around 88. Depending on your natal degree and on Saturn’s retrograde loops, it comes in one, two or three exact passes, over an active period of six weeks to ten months. It is not a scheduled crisis: it is the end of a cycle, when what has been built over twenty-nine years is confirmed, structured or dropped. Which area is concerned depends on the house Saturn occupies in your chart.
Key points
- The return is computed to the degree, not to the age: it is Saturn’s return to its natal longitude, and the date varies by two years depending on your degree.
- There are one to three exact passes, because Saturn is retrograde four and a half months a year. The calculator below gives them all.
- The active period lasts six weeks to ten months (Saturn within 3°), not two and a half years: that figure is the stay in the sign, not the return.
- What the return touches is the house of natal Saturn: career in the 10th, partnership in the 7th, home in the 4th. The table below gives all twelve.
- The second return, around 58, is not a repeat of the first: it is about what remains and what is passed on.

What the Saturn return is
Saturn takes 10,756 days, or 29 years and 5 months, to go round the Sun. Seen from Earth, it therefore covers the 360° of the zodiac in a little under thirty years. The Saturn return is the moment it comes back exactly to the degree it occupied at your birth. Nothing more, nothing less: it is a transit of Saturn to Saturn, the slowest of the personal transits, and the only one you live through just two or three times.
What Saturn stands for in a chart has not changed since the ancient authors: time, limits, structure, responsibility, what lasts because it was built. Its return marks the end of a complete cycle and the start of the next. The most accurate image is an audit, not a storm: what has been built over twenty-nine years is examined, and what does not hold is written off.
The phrase entered everyday English through music: two songs from 2024, one by Ariana Grande, the other by SZA, carry “Saturn” in their titles and are about this passage. Which is fine, as long as one thing is kept in mind: it names a date, and a date can be calculated.
Work out your dates
The websites say “between 27 and 30”. True, and useless: your return has a date, which depends on Saturn’s degree at your birth and on its back-and-forth around that degree. The calculator holds Saturn’s position from 1930 to 2075 and searches for every exact pass of your three returns.
Work out your Saturn return
Enter your date of birth. The calculator finds Saturn’s degree at your birth, then every moment Saturn comes back to it: the exact passes of your first, second and third return, with the period when it stays within 3°.
Saturn’s position computed with Swiss Ephemeris (10-day table, cubic interpolation, accuracy better than 0.01°). The date of birth is taken at noon: the birth time moves natal Saturn by 0.1° at most, so a pass date by a day at most. Dates are in Universal Time.
Windows of the first and second return by year of birth
For a quick read, the table gives, for each year of birth, the interval between the first exact pass of someone born on 1 January and the last pass of someone born on 31 December. Your own return falls somewhere in that interval; the calculator says where.

One, two or three passes: why
Every year, Saturn appears to move backwards for about four and a half months, because the faster Earth overtakes it on its orbit. If your natal degree falls inside that backward stretch, Saturn crosses it three times: moving direct, then retrograde, then direct again. If it falls outside, a single pass. And sometimes Saturn stops just short of the degree, within less than a degree, without touching it a second time.
An example drawn at random by script from the 1990s: someone born on 8 August 1996 has Saturn at 7° 03′ Aries. Their first return came in a single exact pass, on 13 April 2026. But Saturn, having moved on to 14° 45′ by late July 2026, turns back and stops on 11 December 2026 at 7° 56′, within a degree of the natal point, before moving on again. Their active period therefore runs from 20 March 2026 to 28 January 2027, with a single exact pass at the start and a long approach at the end.
Conversely, someone born on 15 June 1950, Saturn at 13° 25′ Virgo, had three exact passes at their first return: on 30 November 1978, 18 January 1979 and 10 August 1979, an active period of ten months. Their second return came in a single pass, on 15 September 2008. Same chart, two returns of different shapes: hence the point of calculating rather than estimating.
The first pass raises the question, the second, retrograde, lets it ripen, the third settles it. That pattern holds for all the slow transits, and the page on transits sets it out. With a single pass, everything plays out in a few weeks, and it is often clearer.
What the return changes, and what it does not
The Saturn return does not change your chart: it wakes it up. What it touches is the place of natal Saturn, its house, its sign, its aspects. And it falls at an age when social life, for its part, presents its own deadlines. In England and Wales, the average age of mothers is 30.9 (ONS, 2023), and first-time mothers are a couple of years younger: the Saturn return coincides, statistically, with the age of the first lasting commitments. It is not Saturn that brings the children; it is that the two clocks strike together, and the second gives the first its weight.
The house of natal Saturn
This is the first thing to look at, and it needs the birth time. The house says in which area the audit takes place. The table gives, for each of the twelve houses, what comes due.
| Saturn in house | Area | What comes due |
|---|---|---|
| I | Identity, the body, how you assert yourself | You stop defining yourself by what was expected of you. The return demands that you take your place, not the one you were left. |
| II | Money, resources, the value you give yourself | The accounts are settled, literally. What is earned must be kept; what is owed is claimed. |
| III | Studies, writing, siblings, short journeys | A course resumed or finished, a word that binds, a relationship with brothers and sisters that gets settled. |
| IV | Home, parents, roots | A move, a purchase, leaving the family home, or caring for a parent: the anchor changes hands. |
| V | Creation, children, the love you give | A child, a work or a project finally carried through, and play that turns serious. |
| VI | Daily work, health, service | The job takes shape or gets left. The body asks for a discipline you kept putting off. |
| VII | Partnership, associates, contracts | Commitment or break-up, but in both cases a clear contract. Vagueness is no longer possible. |
| VIII | Shared money, inheritance, crises of transformation | Debts, loans, estates, dependencies: what ties you to others is renegotiated. |
| IX | Beliefs, abroad, higher studies | A degree, an expatriation, or a belief dropped because it no longer holds. |
| X | Career, reputation, authority | The most visible return: a promotion earned or a wall hit. Your social position is decided. |
| XI | Friends, groups, collective projects | The circle shrinks to those who stay. Group projects need a structure or die. |
| XII | Withdrawal, the unconscious, what you carry alone | A fruitful retreat if chosen, a heavy one if endured. What was hidden asks to be named. |
The aspects of natal Saturn
When Saturn returns to itself, it also re-forms every aspect it made at birth. A natal Saturn square the Sun is square the Sun again during the return: the tension between what you want and what you can is at its peak. A Saturn trine the Moon brings, on the contrary, an emotional steadiness that helps you decide. The return is therefore as different from one person to the next as Saturn’s aspects are, which is why the generic portraits miss.
The other transits of the moment
Saturn never travels alone. People born from 1996 to 1999 are living their first return with Saturn in Aries between 2025 and 2029, and Neptune enters Aries at the same time: their return is doubled with a questioning of ideals that earlier generations did not meet in this form. The article on the transits of 2027 places these movements. For a past return, look at what Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were doing the same year.
It does not destroy what holds. A solid couple, a chosen profession, a house paid for go through the return without a tremor: Saturn confirms what is built. What it removes is what rested on nothing, and that is usually what you were already complaining about. The portrait of the Saturnian type shows what this planet gives once it has been understood.
The cycle between two returns: 7, 14, 21
Between two returns, Saturn forms with its natal position a square around 7, an opposition around 14 or 15, a second square around 21 or 22. These are the four beats of one cycle, and each repeats a version of the same question. The square at 7 is the entry into the rules, the opposition at 14 the revolt against them, the square at 21 the first attempt at autonomy, and the return at 29 the moment you become the authority you used to contest.
The same rhythm then starts again: square around 36 or 37, opposition around 44, square around 51 or 52, second return around 58 or 59. Then square around 66, opposition around 73, square around 81, and third return around 88. The calculator gives only the returns, but once the natal degree is known, the other dates can be read in any ephemeris: they fall when Saturn is 90° or 180° from that degree.
The second return, at 58
The second return, between 57 and 60, gets less comment than the first, and is more interesting. The first asked you to build. The second asks what you do with what was built: what remains, what is passed on, what you still want to start. It comes before State Pension age, 66 now and 67 from 2028, and often coincides with the last career choices, the independence of grown-up children, and the place you take beside your own parents.
The house of natal Saturn keeps the lead: in the 10th, the professional legacy is settled; in the 4th, the house and the roots; in the 5th, the relationship with the children and with what you created. But the tone is different: at 29, Saturn imposes the form; at 58, it asks whether the form was worth it, and it leaves time to answer. People born from 1967 to 1970 are in this passage between 2025 and 2030, at the same time as the 1996-1999 generation lives its first return: parents and children, often, at the same moment.
The Saturn return reads well only in a complete birth chart, with Saturn’s house and aspects. If Saturn dominates your chart, the dominant planet method will say so, and the return takes on a different scale altogether.
Frequently asked questions about the Saturn return
At what age does the Saturn return happen?
Saturn takes 29 years and 5 months to go round the zodiac. The first return therefore falls between 28 and 30, the second between 57 and 60, the third around 88. The exact age depends on Saturn’s degree at your birth and on its retrograde loops: the calculator in this article gives the dates to the hour from your date of birth alone.
How long does a Saturn return last?
The exact pass lasts an instant, but Saturn stays within 3° of the natal degree for anywhere between two and ten months, depending on whether it turns retrograde nearby. With a single clean pass, the active period is often six to ten weeks; when Saturn retrogrades close to the degree, it stretches to ten months or a year. Articles announcing “two and a half years” are talking about Saturn’s stay in the whole sign, which is something else.
Is the Saturn return always a hard time?
No. It is a deadline, not a punishment. Saturn asks that what has been started over twenty-nine years be structured, kept or dropped. For someone who has already done that sorting, the return feels like a confirmation. For someone who has put it off, it feels like a bill. The difficulty is proportional to what was left hanging, not to the planet.
What happens at the second Saturn return, around 58?
The second return, between 57 and 60, asks what remains and what is passed on. It comes before State Pension age in the UK, 66 now and 67 from 2028, which often makes it a moment of decision about the last years of a career, the place of grown-up children, and what you still want to build rather than maintain.
How do I know whether I am in my Saturn return?
Enter your date of birth in the calculator above: it gives the exact dates and the active period. If you were born between 1996 and 1999, your first return plays out between 2025 and 2029, with Saturn in Aries; born between 1967 and 1970, your second return runs between 2025 and 2030. Born between 1993 and 1996, it has just passed, with Saturn in Pisces.
Do I need my birth time to work out my Saturn return?
Not for the date. Saturn moves 0.1° a day at most, so the time shifts the natal degree by a fraction of a degree, and the pass date by a day at the very most. The time becomes necessary to know which house natal Saturn is in, which says which area of life the return is about.
